CLASS DESCRIPTION

Artificial Intelligence is rapidly becoming part of daily operations in local government and parks & recreation agencies — from marketing and communications to data analysis and customer service. This course provides a practical, non-technical overview of how AI tools are being used today, the risks associated with unmanaged or “shadow AI,” and the policies agencies must put in place to protect data, staff, and the public.

Designed specifically for public-sector professionals, this session explores AI security fundamentals, governance models, and policy best practices that align with real-world local government environments. Participants will leave with a clear understanding of how to safely evaluate, govern, and manage AI tools within their organizations while maintaining public trust and regulatory compliance.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify common AI use cases within local governments and parks & recreation agencies.
  2. Explain key security and data privacy risks associated with unmanaged AI use.
  3. Define “shadow AI” and understand why it poses organizational risks.
  4. Recognize the essential components of an effective AI governance and policy framework.
  5. Apply best practices for evaluating, approving, and managing AI tools in a public-sector setting.

After successfully passing the Knowledge Check, participants will receive a completion certificate and follow-up email. The PRB+ University team is actively working to create partnerships with CEU-accrediting agencies and administrators.
