CLASS DESCRIPTION

Climbing That Connects explores how climbing structures in parks and recreation spaces can foster physical development, social connection, and inclusive play. Drawing on real-world examples and proven design principles, this course helps parks and recreation professionals understand how thoughtfully designed climbing experiences support community building, managed risk-taking, and accessibility. Participants will gain practical insights into selecting, designing, and implementing climbing features that encourage creativity, confidence, and cooperative play for users of all ages.


Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Explain the physical, social, and cognitive benefits of climbing-based play.
  2. Identify key design elements that make climbing structures inclusive and engaging.
  3. Understand safety standards and risk-management considerations for climbing features.
  4. Evaluate how climbing experiences promote social connection and cooperation.
  5. Apply best practices when selecting or designing climbing features for community spaces.

After successfully passing the Knowledge Check, participants will receive a completion certificate and follow-up email. ABOUT THE PRESENTER

Courtney Gallagher

Courtney Gallagher brings 4 years of experience with EP Climbing, where she currently serves as Outdoor Sales Manager. With a background in sustainable landscape design and as a passionate outdoor climber herself, Courtney found her calling by focusing on working with communities to integrate climbing into their parks and greenspaces.  Courtney believes that creating climbing opportunities that are free and open to the public, in turn, creates opportunity for building confidence, strength, and social connections for all on and off the rock.
