The day before my oldest daughter’s sixth birthday, a big, orange Home Depot truck pulled into my driveway and dropped off all the pieces-parts to a basic backyard swing set—the kind with room for three swings and a teeter-totter. No slide. No play house. Just the good stuff—the stuff I remembered loving as a boy.

At the time, I was working from home, so when the truck pulled out of the driveway, I messaged my boss to let him know I was taking the rest of the day off and headed to the garage to start assembling my daughter’sbirthday present.

It looked straight-forward—drill a few holes, attach a few plates and “voila”—a happy little girl swinging away on her birthday morning.
