Creating outdoor spaces that are durable, safe, inclusive, and visually cohesive requires thoughtful planning and informed product selection. In this on-demand session from ParkFest 2025, Megan Deacon of ParknPool shares proven, real-world strategies for selecting and maintaining commercial-grade site furnishings and amenities.
Designed for parks and recreation professionals, municipal staff, designers, and facility managers, this course walks through best practices for a wide range of outdoor elements—including pool furniture, site amenities, bleachers and grandstands, water products, dog parks, and shade structures. Participants will gain practical guidance on durability, safety, ADA compliance, maintenance, sustainability, and vendor partnerships to help ensure outdoor spaces perform well over time while meeting community needs and design goals.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Identify best practices for selecting commercial-grade outdoor furnishings based on durability, safety, comfort, and long-term value.
- Apply ADA accessibility principles to site furnishings, layouts, and amenities to create inclusive outdoor environments.
- Evaluate materials and finishes for weather resistance, maintenance needs, and performance across different climates and use levels.
- Plan effective placement and layout of site amenities to support safety, functionality, traffic flow, and visual cohesion.
- Recognize the value of partnering with experienced suppliers to support compliance, customization, maintenance planning, and lifecycle cost management.
After successfully passing the Knowledge Check, participants will receive a follow-up email with their quiz results, class description, and learning objectives. These records can be used to follow the self-report/self-directed method of obtaining CEUs/CECs, in which students submit materials to their accrediting organization or education chair, and the approving body makes the final determination about awarding credits.
