CLASS DESCRIPTION

Off-leash dog parks are one of the fastest-growing segments of park amenities—and when they’re planned well, they deliver benefits far beyond the dogs. This CEU-eligible online learning session provides practical, research-informed guidance for planning, designing, and maintaining off-leash dog parks that are safe, inclusive, and built to last.

Using real-world case studies and best-practice recommendations, participants will explore how to choose the right location (including creative reuse of underutilized spaces), determine appropriate size and layout, and select key features such as double-gate entry systems, fencing options, accessible paths, shade, seating, and waste management. The session also covers surfacing choices and materials/finishes that impact durability, traction, comfort, and long-term maintenance. Finally, participants will learn how to strengthen community support and increase utilization through partnerships, programming, and marketing strategies that turn a dog park into a true community destination.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  1. List at least five benefits of off-leash dog parks for individuals and communities, including social, physical, and wellness impacts.
  2. Outline key planning and design considerations for off-leash dog parks, including location selection, size, layout typologies, and drainage needs.
  3. Identify essential safety and accessibility features such as fencing height and design, double-gate entry systems, signage, and ADA-informed access.
  4. Compare surfacing and materials options (e.g., grass, turf, mulch, decomposed granite, gravel, sand) based on performance, maintenance requirements, and user comfort.
  5. Develop strategies to increase utilization and stewardship through partnerships, programming, fundraising, and marketing tactics supported by case examples.
