Joey was a 10-year old boy who had never known his father. He was raised by his mother Hanna, who saw the best in people, had hope in any situation, and saw every day as a new chance to help people and enjoy life. As he grew, Joey was just the same and never felt he lacked anything. He had been taught to love and embrace life through Hanna’s example.

At school, he was everyone’s friend. He encouraged shy kids on the playground to get into the kickball game or play some tag. He told people things like “Nice sweater” or “Hey, great haircut!” He did all his homework and always turned it in on time. He had good relationships with his teachers; he was not a teacher’s pet but certainly one they were glad to see on their roster each fall.

Hanna and Joey loved their neighborhood, too. The small town had a bakery, barber, cobbler, bike shop, and corner breakfast place. Hanna knew each of the proprietors, and therefore so did Joey; they did everything together.
