How specialty camps help children with health conditions
By Macey Shofroth
When I was five years old, my primary care provider told my parents, “She has type one diabetes.” One thought crossed all three of our minds: What the heck is that?
Type 1 diabetes is a chronic illness in which a person’s pancreas no longer produces insulin, resulting in the inability to convert food into energy. My parents had never heard of this thing that was about to rule our lives. No one in my small town had the disease. We had no history of it in our family. All my parents knew were the contemporary depictions of type 2 diabetes, which didn’t seem to fit the healthy, active five-year-old they knew. This was the beginning of a journey that would be lonely and intimidating.
That is, until we found Camp Hertko Hollow.
