As the first chord of Matchbox 20’s song “Closing Time” strikes my ear, I reflexively reach over and turn the radio up. I’ve always loved this song, but today, driving to work through the gray, rain-soaked morning after putting my kids on the bus for the first day of school, it somehow seems perfect--like somebody up above is tuning the radio’s playlist to my particular emotions.
It’s funny how that happens sometimes. Better than an iPod playlist or (I’m showing my age here) a carefully crafted “mix” tape, this happy coincidence of music and emotion has me bobbing my head and occasionally singing out loud.
At my favorite line, “Closing time, every new beginning comes from some other beginning’s end,” my mind veers off to ponder once again how absolutely true this is.
