It was 6 p.m. in late December and already pitch black. I pulled into the lot at Huffman Park, turned off my lights and engine and jumped out of the truck. Cary, my running partner, was already at the trail head—bopping up and down on his toes, fiddling with his head lamp.
“Yo—you ready?” he asked.
“Yep.”
