Our middle daughter, a freshman in college, arrived home for her first Thanksgiving break last night. We all stood in the driveway, awaiting her arrival—thanks to Apple’s “Find My Friends” app, we knew when she was close.
She hopped out of the car, a bundle of energy and love, giving hugs, paying attention to the dog desperately trying to lick her face off and so on; it’s basically the same scene that plays out all over the country that week.
As we went inside to enjoy the special “Welcome Home!” dinner my wife made for her, she started to regale us with all the stories from her first few months on her own. As I listened to her shotgun stories and ideas and experiences at us, I couldn’t help but notice a theme. So many of the cool experiences she had were made possible by the awesome programs and facilities her college, Boise State University (BSU), had created. She talked about the Outdoor Recreation program and all the events she’d gone on with them—hot spring tours in the mountains, night hikes in the foothills (on Friday the 13th nonetheless), raft trips and so on.
