Nine13sports’ new bicycle skills and safety park is an investment in Indianapolis

An old, dilapidated parking lot sat on the corner of 29th Street and the Canal in northwest Indianapolis for many years. It had become a receptacle for illegal trash dumping. It took Tom Hanley, founder and CEO of Nine13sports, a few years to track down who owned the property.

Soon after, Hanley and Nine13sports, a nonprofit providing Indianapolis youth with access to bicycle-based fitness and educational programming, purchased the land and turned it into a bicycle skills and safety park, which opened to the public in late 2026.

“Once we got ahold of the property owner, we told them what we were looking for and what we wanted, and how we could utilize the grounds to make a true impact on this neighborhood, repurpose this blighted asset, and create an opportunity that wasn’t just focused on Nine13sports programming, but would actually be able to create a destination for the public,” Hanley says.
