How Exploration Station reimagined a beloved indoor space

There are few things more nostalgic than revisiting a place you loved as a child. The building may look smaller than you remember, but the feeling comes rushing back. You remember where you climbed, where you pretended, and the stories you created there. For generations of families in Bourbonnais, Ill., that place was the medieval castle inside Bourbonnais Township Park District’s Exploration Station.

For years, the castle was more than an exhibit. It became part of the community's shared story. Parents, who once explored its towers as children, eventually returned with kids of their own, eager to introduce them to the same magical place.

But even the most beloved spaces have a lifespan. After decades of daily adventures, the castle had reached the point where safety concerns could no longer be ignored. Museum leaders faced a difficult question: How do you replace something so many people loved without losing the magic that made it special?

The answer wasn't to recreate the castle. It was to create a new destination worthy of the memories still waiting to be made.

The result is Storybook Forest, an immersive environment where classic stories, imaginative play, and family connection come together beneath the canopy of a giant storybook tree.
