They matter for many reasons in youth sports
When kids get excited about sports, it’s one of the best things to witness—their energy, enthusiasm, and eagerness to join a team can be contagious. But before they jump into organized sports, there’s an important step that often is overlooked: learning the fundamentals. These early building blocks don’t only make kids better athletes down the road; they make the entire experience more fun, more rewarding, and far less overwhelming.
Foundation Of Fun
I remember one incident from my playing days very well. My family lived in Indiana, so it was essentially a requirement to try basketball at some point. I was on a team with my two older brothers. Back then, youth programs often featured three-year age groups, with no mandated playing time, and the younger kids accepted sitting on the bench for at least a season.
My oldest brother was quite good and a starter. I was OK because I played as much as I could with the older kids in our driveway. I loved basketball, but I was too young and too small to have any real time on the court, so I mostly watched. My middle brother wasn’t great; he was more of a wrestler and more interested in individual sports, but obviously, one sport for all three of us made it easier for our parents!
