My wife packed up the 10-year-olds and headed for one last afternoon at the pool before the start of school. I was left at home to finish the very last step on the summer project that was our backyard tree house. I grabbed my tools, pulled the truck around back and went to work creating a pulley system that would allow the girls to use an old silver bucket to move supplies from the ground with ease.
As I worked, my old friend, Willie Nelson, crooned away on my Spotify playlist and my 16-year-old daughter lounged in the shade, reading a book and absent-mindedly petting Snickerdoodle—our nine-month-old dog.
It was the perfect way to end summer vacation.
