One of the things my Dad drilled into me when we started this business over 20 years ago was that, “You are what you count.” In his mind, the key to being successful was determining what was important enough to be counted (or measured), and then putting in a system to automatically provide that data—something that updated in real-time—perfectly.
It’s a tall order, but a rule I’ve come to realize is literally worth its weight in gold.
So, let’s break it down. The first part of the rule is to determine what is important enough to be counted. Obviously, you can’t measure everything—it’s unrealistic, contradictory, and leads to confusion.
