Many years ago, the girls’ basketball program was one of the most popular winter league activities that I oversaw in Wilmington, Del.
But I always ran into difficulty finding officials for scheduled games. So, one day I asked one of the girls who had played the previous year what she was doing now that she had outgrown the program’s age limit. She said she was bored and missed playing basketball. I asked if she would ever consider volunteering to officiate games. And guess what? She jumped at the idea.
Since she was so enthusiastic, I contacted all of the young ladies who had gone through the basketball program to gauge their interest in officiating. To my surprise, I heard back from 18 who offered to help out. That marked the start of regular Saturday-morning training sessions; after that, we never had a problem finding women to officiate.
