Liberty Silver Center provides opportunities for older adults to thrive
Day by day, minute by minute, we are all aging. This part of life is a gift, or at least that’s how it’s viewed at the Silver Center in Liberty, Mo.
The city’s Community Services team works diligently to ensure that all older adults (60+) are cared for and have the tools they need to succeed. There is so much fun, and there are many happy conversations and meaningful lessons happening within the walls of the Silver Center. It is a safe place to socialize, have a nutritious meal, continue to learn, and have some fun. The activities allow seniors to try something new, get out of their comfort zone, move their bodies, and learn some truly helpful life skills as they age.
Brigitte Thomas, Liberty Parks & Rec’s Silver Center Coordinator, plans all the activities, presentations, and special events at the center. Thomas is not only a welcoming presence but also a friend to all. She’s energetic, has a fiery passion, and creates a space of beauty for seniors to visit and feel engaged with the community. She oversees the lunch staff and volunteers, and she knows every older adult who walks through the door.
Bob Lawson, who attends the center often, jokes about Thomas, saying, “You have to be a drill sergeant to keep these people in line. She’s really competent to do the job, she’s entertaining, she’s fun, she comes up with new stuff to do all the time. Between her and us, we keep people informed on what’s going on, opportunities to join things and take advantage of benefits.”
