As I write this, I’m in the midst of moving my family from the suburbs of St. Louis, Mo., to the suburbs of St. Paul, Minn. This is move #4 for my husband and I, and our second one with kiddos, so the beats are familiar.
One such beat was the house-hunting trip. Because this is a corporate move, our timeline to find a new home was significantly compressed. We traveled to Minnesota on a Sunday evening, visited 20+ properties (and revisited a few, too), and made an offer on one of them—by the following Friday. That’s right—we had less than seven days to figure out where we wanted to live, in a city we’d never been to before. No pressure at all!
It’s an abrupt way to get acquainted with a new community. Sellers’ disclosures, datasheets, square footage, siding types, home inspections—we dug deep on the homes we wanted to live in, but the actual city remained at arm’s length.
