How a 15-year vision transformed Four Winds Field into a year-round destination and catalyst for downtown South Bend's revitalization

On a summer evening in South Bend, Ind., it’s easy to focus on the action between the foul lines. The crack of the bat, the roar of the crowd, and the familiar rhythm of Minor League Baseball remain at the heart of Four Winds Field. But look beyond the game itself and a larger story emerges—one of strategic planning, community investment, and the transformation of a traditional ballpark into a regional entertainment destination.

What makes Four Winds Field unique is not any single renovation project. Rather, it’s the result of a vision that has been unfolding for more than a decade.

Since 2009, the City of South Bend, the South Bend Cubs organization, and design partners have worked together to continuously reimagine the stadium experience. The goal was never simply to renovate a baseball facility. Instead, the objective was to create a family-focused, year-round destination that strengthens connections to downtown, supports economic development, and gives residents an entertainment experience typically associated with much larger markets.

The results have been remarkable.

Between 2009 and 2019, annual attendance has more than doubled, from approximately 150,000 visitors to more than 320,000. As attendance grew, so did the community's appetite for additional amenities, expanded event opportunities, and new ways to experience the ballpark.
