Lessons from Gatton Park on the Town Branch

For decades, the nearly 12 acres of land behind Rupp Arena in Lexington, Ky., offered little more than parking and pavement. Today, the vast expanse of asphalt is Gatton Park on the Town Branch, an 11.6-acre public space designed as both a cultural hub and an everyday gathering place. The park’s development required more than $55 million in private funding and nearly a decade of visioning, fundraising, and community input. Its transformation illustrates the impact that sustained philanthropic investment and thoughtful planning can have on a civic landscape.

Since 2019, Agora Partners has served as an advisory partner for Gatton Park on the Town Branch, guiding programming, design team selection, and operational strategy, including the development of business, staffing, and revenue plans to ensure the park’s long-term sustainability. Agora also led the shaping of a comprehensive programming strategy that would appeal to Lexington’s diverse demographics. This included creating conceptual spatial organization for the amenities outlined in the programming strategy, as well as recommending a full slate of activities and classes—from fitness programs to arts and crafts, nature-based programming, and performances for both children and families. Agora continues in an ongoing consulting role for programming and park management today, helping position the park as a national model for privately funded urban parks.
